Blacksmith Festival 2007 – it was something to remember !

Утомленные ожиданием сердца глухо стукнули… «Ждали целый год…» Двери автобусов, поездов, гостиниц, стукнули во второй раз: «Гости приехали, встречайте!», и вот, наконец, и оно! …десятки молотков ударили, застучали по многим наковальням одновременно: «Мы дождались! Мы уже тут! Мы на празднике кузнецов! Спасибо, что мы опять вместе!»

Слились воедино работы, помыслы, желания более чем 300 кузнецов: каждый вел свою линию, и тем не менее, не было какофонии, а был дружный хор, если хотите- оркестр. Вместе была сыграна великолепная опера, симфония, оратория, где каждый был услышан, где работа каждого будет увидена, где организация фестиваля была расписана как по нотам…

Одним словом, был какой-то драйв, такой, что глаза начинают светиться и искриться каждый раз, когда кому-нибудь начинаешь рассказывать о «Святе ковалів», был праздник. Праздник единства, радость общения, великолепные минуты встречи друзей из многих стран! Это всегда поражает: бывает, виделись один раз год назад, а встречаешь, как давнего друга; крепкие мужские/дружеские объятья, рукопожатия; первые слова при встрече идут от самого сердца – скупые слова настоящих мужчин ,но даже это не многословие не в состоянии скрыть радость от очередной встречи, желания поделиться новостями, обсудить планы. Потом – водопад новых знакомств, новых друзей, нового всего!..

Хотя Ивано-Франковск не гонится за количеством стран-участниц, но цифра 22 поражает воображение – самый представительный по количественному и качественному составу гостей фестиваль на территории восточной Европы; не просто отдельные кузнецы, а целые делегации из Бельгии, Голландии, Италии, Беларуси, России, Великобритании, Франции, Литвы; мастера из Польши, Чехии, Молдовы, Лихтенштейна, Австрии приехали к нам; география участников расширилась: впервые нас поддержали Австралия, Финляндия, Канада, Грузия, о.Курасао, Литва, Бельгия, Венгрия, просто на нас посмотреть приехал гость из Ирландии…

И было на что посмотреть, скажу я вам !

Целый год шаманили организаторы фестиваля, совершали ряд обрядов, чтоб кузнечные боги стали милостивее и добрее. Памятуя про прошлогодний затяжной дождь на фестивале, было решено сделать подарок и богам, и жителям города, и себе- сотворить монументальную композицию «Пасхальное солнце». Закипела работа по подготовке основы композиции: каждый луч большого солнца изготовляли лучшие мастера принимающей команды- 12 профессионалов или кузнечных фирм подарили миру свой лучик Солнца, свое видение темы, свой свет кузнечной души. Нет ни одного повтора, каждый – шедевр в отдельности, а в совокупности – и того более! По почерку работы узнаёшь М. Зарицкого (“Гефест”),OOO “Арма”, Б. Новосельського, Т. Рудика, Р. Заборського, С. Чайку, В. Гринчишина, О. Жебчука.

На открытие фестиваля основа солнышка была готова: поверхность его ждала даров от кузнецов, деталей декора, откованных за 2 часа на площади фестиваля. Самая большая площадь на два дня претворилась в кузнечное горнило: более 15 горнов и 27 наковален не пустовали за эти дни: команда сменяла команду, образовались смешанные пары, которые были созданы на фестивале: Украина-Венгрия, братались кузнецы с Крыма и Бельгии: два дня они проводили свою шоу-программу, развлекали посетителей, подружились и в финале менялись футболками. Рядом с ними работали команди з Италии и Нидерландов и тоже два дня. Это было особенностью фестиваля этого года: 4 группы кузнецов из 4 стран представляли свою шоу-программу, завлекая в процесс ковки зрителей, детей, женщин, угощая деликатесами из своих стран, Хууб Сенсен жарил прямо на огне и раздавал желающим хрустящие вкусности, было что попробовать и у бельгийцев, угощал Роже Бокстаеле ( Bockstaele Roger), президент бельгийской гильдии кузнецов( ASG – Ambachtelijke Smeders Gilde van Belgie, или Artistic blackSmith OrGanisation of Belgien), Италия радовала сицилийскими лимонами от самого Пиппо Контарино, еще одного президента- на этот раз Ассоциации кузнецов Сицилии. Был еще один претендент ассоциации кузнецов Линас Лесчкаускас из Литвы, молодой, перспективный кузнец. Вместе с ним приехал Зигмундас Жилинскас – открытие Альфреда Хаберманна в 2005 году в Хельфштыне (Чехия), уникальний мастер с узнаваемым стилем. Его работы впервые представлены в Украине, что, несомненно, вызвало неподдельный интерес украинских кузнецов. «Фишками» фестиваля стали: Шартелла Сантьяго- редкий случай соединения женской грации и мужской профессии, изящные пальцы в перстнях с наманикюренными длинными ногтями и газовая горелка в них; Херв Ванхоутте из Бельгии, герой-супермен, поразивший умы всех корреспондентов, покорив 2 тысячи километров на своем мотоцикле –редкость для наших краев; живописные финны Sami Karkkainen и Jarkko Vaisanen., очень самобытные, коммуникабельные, экстравагантные…Под стать им и канадец Патрик МакАйвон шотландского происхождения в килте – национальной юбке; он был такой же экзотикой для местных жителей, как и вышеупомянутые герои.

Хозяева фестиваля тоже не подкачали: была тут и Школа традиционного кузнечества под барабанный бой Богдана Попова из Киева, и шоу Сергея Фирсова. Он делал чудеса – помогал людям раскрыться, постояв у очищающего горна, отковав первую в своей жизни подкову, гвоздь – да неважно что, главное – результат: ты сделал что-то сам! Символом фестиваля второй год подряд стали «кузнечные» вареники Владимира Кудлейчука; только в этом году они уже не просто были с различными начинками из гвоздей, шурупов, стружки, они стали разрисованными детьми в украинских народных традициях. «Королем» вареников стал огромный толстячок, в который, как в копилку, бросали копеечки за съеденные настоящие украинские вареники, сваренные прямо на огне горна и подаваемыми прекрасными украинскими красавицами. Вот так экзотика –скушать вареник на откованной огромной вилке, улыбнуться, будто бы в начинке – вся радость украинских кузнецов от многочисленных знакомств, международного общения… Этот большущий вареник, потяжелев от центов, копеек, сантимов еще сыграет свою объединяющую и «миссионерскую» роль при закрытии фестиваля: все станут свидетелями , как все копеечки высыпались под аплодисменты и слезы радости в фонтан – по старинной традиции, если кинуть монетку в воду, то обязательно вернешься на следующий год. Вот и посыпались в воду, как рыбешки, желания: «Хочу приехать!», «Хочу вернуться!», «Хочу увидеть все снова!».

Было что увидеть, поверьте мне…Два дня молотили кузнецы молотами – готовили свои декоративные дополнения к «Солнышку».. и появились к субботе на поверхности солнца автопортреты кузнецов (из Донецка – чеканка В.Бурдука, сыгравшего весомую роль в организации фестиваля); маленькие улыбки, красивые сочетания стекла и металла (Мартин Клих, Польша); работы студентов , преподавателей ВУЗов и колледжей из Минска, Киева, Львова, Ужгорода, Ивано-Франковска и Прикарпатья.В каждый из трех дней программа была насыщена событиями; действо продолжалось с утра до вечера: торжественное открытие фестиваля в первый день, приветствие мэра города Виктора Анушкевичуса, торжественное перерезание ленты при открытии монументальной скульптуры «Букет мастров-II», выполненный на фестивале 2006 года (теперь в Украине две такие скульптуры: одна в Донецке, другая в Ивано-Франковске, обе сделаны в нашем городе); пресс-конференция организаторов для СМИ – масса вопросов ко всем участникам и в частности к В.Сохоневичу, известному в мире художнику по металлу, конференция вечером в форме доверительной беседы, так сделали бы друзья в тесном кругу. Ничего, что круг расширился до 150 человек: множество вопросов к В.Маркову из Питера по теме «Проектирование металла в архитектуре», Себастьяну Сико из Франции по теме международного профессионального обмена учениками, Сергею Тяско из Ужгорода (Украина), представившего самобытную, со свойственным этому городу уникальным почерком современную ковку, представление на суд слушателей проекта «Парк кованых фигур» в Донецке, рассказ о работе Сицилийской организации кузнецов от Пиппо Контарино, повествование о современной и традиционной финской школе ковки. Но больше всех поразил и заинтересовал Фердинандо Нава (Франция), поведавший о секретах изготовления и выплавки чистого железа. Многие цокали языком от удивления, вертя в руках слитки этого уникального редкого для кузнецов материала, обладающего фантастическими свойствами: ковкостью, пластичностью, податливостью – подарок от Бога для желающих заняться ювелиркой – материал себя отлично зарекомендовал.

Уставшие за день напряженной работы кузнецы продолжили знакомство на фуршете – было так замечательно вкусно, что слюнки и до сих пор текут!

В субботу, 5 мая, опять с утра до вечера стучали молотки на площади, не хватало места всем желающим поковать в тесном кругу друзей. День был выходной, зрителей добавилось очень много, особенно привлек внимание традиционный рыцарский турнир из Крыма – бои на площади, доспехи разных эпох и народов, настоящая острота нешуточных и недетских боев передалась и зрителям. Они ухали, поддерживая своих любимцев, то сужали кольцо зрителей, то расступались, давая место для любителей рыцарских забав.

Если вы никогда не бывали на кузнечных вечеринках – вам стоит побывать! Принюхайтесь – жарится кабанчик на вертеле, чудесно под пиво он куда-то быстро исчезает; прислушайтесь: кузнецы разных национальностей просто-таки соревновалась, кто знает больше песен. Победили украинцы, за что им благодарные слушатели сицилийцы преподнесли в дар бутылку итальянского вина, написали, что этот вечер в ресторане им е забыть никогда, просятся приехать снова! Да всегда рады, приезжайте! Тем, кто не был в этом чудесном ресторане в украинском народном стиле – колыбе , тому сложно описать то единение душ, братание, разговоры, обмен информацией, листание альбомов с кузнечными работами, построением планов на будущее. Тут крепнет кузнечная дружба, тут завязываются многолетние профессиональные отношения!

Настает третий день, день открытия кузнечной выставки в художественном музее, в здании костела XVII века. Сама обстановка- стрельчатые окна, эхо в высоких перестенках – придает пафоса событию. Приветственные речи, награждение дипломами организаторов фестиваля, чествование спонсоров –Алчевского металлургического комбината, финансовой компании «Декра», «Облэнерго»,торговой сети «Фаворит» из Ивано-Франковска –каждый получил сюрприз от организаторов- маленькое солнышко, копию большого монументального проекта «Пасхальное солнце», который вскоре будет установлен на одной из площадей города. И все расходятся насладиться искусством, так как все больше по праву можно назвать выставку именно так. Филигранная техника,оригинальность идей,мастерство, сочетание традиционных методов ковки и современных технологий, новизна и дань традициям…Жюри выбрало победителей и их работы войдут в каталог следующего года. Команда Бельгии отметила высокий уровень работ в Украине и уже дала заявку на участие в фестивале на следующий год. Двое финнов, порассказывав на родине про «Свято ковалів», уже везут большущую команду будущих участников из Финляндии в 2008 году. Один только канадец, вернувшись после фестиваля на кузнечные курсы в Иббзиц (Австрия), в родной город Альфреда Хаберманна, пустил хорошие круги по воде!.. Успех?! Возможно… но важнее всего единение и дружба, завязавшаяся в Ивано-Франковске…

Украина для многих гостей явилась приятным и неожиданным открытием: большинство из иностранных участников никогда не бывали в стране до этого, поэтому мероприятия последних дней были предложены тем, кто хотел бы глубже узнать и почувствовать душу народа, его традиции и обряды. Были организованы три экскурсии, какая из них лучше-сложно сказать; судите сами: поездка в музей писанки, где собраны пасхальные яйца со всех регионов Украины и других стран. Сам музей построен тоже в форме яйца. После одного музея- второй: музей гуцульской этнографии и культуры – масса впечатлений!

Любителей дикой природы отвез в нехоженые места Карпат старинный австрийский паровозик: это песня и поэзия – сидя на открытой платформе вагончика в компании друзей, любоваться пробуждением Карпат, горными реками и нетронутой красотой гор!

Самыми стойкими оказались человек 37, которые в понедельник собрались с ночевкой в прекрасное место в горах- курортный городок Яремче с посещением водопада, походом в горы, кормлением оленей и диких кабанов в вольере, сувенирным рынком, проживанием в живописных коттеджах с сауной, река под окнами журчит, убаюкивая.… Но никто не заснул до поздней ночи – вечеринка на природе удалась на славу, жарили шашлык, пробовали традиционное гуцульское блюдо банош, ели картошку, запечённою в костре. Но самое главное – фантастическое единение, родство души! Язык не помеха – все понимали др др. без слов – поддерживали аплодисментами выступления “певцов и танцоров” разных стран, сразу старались подпевать, подхватывая мелодию, ритм с нескольких тактов. Что за вечер это был! Незабываемый!

Уезжать не хотелось… Сложно прощаться з близкими друзьями на один год, даже если они обещали обязательно приехать на следующий год, да не одни, а новыми участниками, которым они расскажут об этих удивительных трёх днях на Прикарпатье, о незабываемых впечатлениях, о крепкой дружбе… «Почувствуй эту страну, узнай этих отрытых, общительных, гостеприимных людей, Поехали!!!»

… Люки самолётов стукнули, закрываясь… – мы едем заказывать билеты на следующий год на VI международный фестиваль в Ивано-Франковск в мае следующего год! Гостеприимная Украина уже ждёт вас.

Умолкли звуки молота, никто не стучит по наковальне – но пройдёт год – и оживут, заискрятся, загорятся сердца и будет снова праздник кузнецов!

Tired of waiting hearts had one more hollow beat…”We were waiting for the whole year…” The doors of buses , trains, hotels had another beat/bang—“The guests have arrived, meet them!!’ ,—- and here it comes at last- dozens of hammers hit, banged the anvils, all at once : “We were on tenterhooks- and here we are!! We are here already! We are at the Blacksmith Festival! Thank you that we are together again!)
Thoughts, works, dreams of more than 300 blacksmiths were joined together: everyone had his own solo but nevertheless there was no cacophony but there was a joined, friendly choir, an orchestra if you like this word more. A wonderful opera , symphony, oratorio was played together by all participants where everyone was heard, where the work of everyone was seen, where the organization of the festival was almost! always ! smooth like clockwork…
In one word, there was such indescribable driving mood/drive this your eyes start sparkling every time you begin talking and telling someone about this Blacksmith Festival, that was a real festival of unity, the joy of contacts/ intercourse, wonderful minutes of meeting the friends from many countries. It is always a shocking /striking experience( in the good meaning of the word) : sometimes it can be so that you see the person once one year ago but meet him again as an old friend; tight masculine/friendly hugs, handshakes, the first words you say when see the person come from the bottom of the heart-those are not many words but those of the real men! But even this briefness cannot hide joy of the next meeting, the desire to share the news, discuss the plans…and then- the waterfall of new meetings /acquaintances, new friends, new everything!!
Although Ivano-Frankivsk doesn’t strive to get the maximum number of countries participating in the festival but the number 22 strikes imagination – it is the most representative festival on the territory of the Eastern Europe in its quantitative and qualitative membership : not only individual blacksmiths arrived but the delegations from Belgium, Holland, Italy, Belarus, Russia, Great Britain, France, Lithuania; craftsmen from Poland, Czechia, Moldova, Lichtenstein, Austria came to us, the geography of the participants became wider-for the first time we were supported by Australia, Finland, Canada, Georgia, island of Curasao(former Holland colony) , Lithuania, Belgium, Hungary.. A guest from Ireland came just to see the festival …
And I would tell you: there was a lot to see!!
The whole year the organizers of the festival practiced shamanism, performed a lot of a rites to coax blacksmith gods into sending good weather for the time of the festival. Everybody remembered last year’s lengthy rain at the festival; that is why it was decided to make a present both to the blacksmith gods and the dwellers of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk and to the participants. A monumental sculpture “Easter Sun” was made. The work to prepare the base of the sculpture was in full swing: every ray of the big sun was made by the best blacksmith artists of the receiving ( as in football) team- 12 professionals or blacksmith firms presented the world (with)their own ray of Sun, their own vision/sight/understanding of the theme/topic, the light of their blacksmith soul. There is no a single repetition, each ray is a masterpiece if taken separately, but taken all together – and the collaborative sculpture becomes even more significant/magnificent. By the style of the work you can recognize the ray of M.Zarytskiy (firm “Gefest”, director M.Klochko), firm “ARMA”(director – S.Polubotko), B.Novoselskiy, T.Rudik, R.Zaborskiy, S.Chaika, V.Hrynchyshyn, O.Zhebchuk.
For the opening day of the festival the base /construction of the sun was ready: its surface was waiting for the blacksmiths’ gifts, details of decoration. The small details were supposed to be forged during 2 hours for each team at the place of the festival by any volunteer. The biggest square of the city has turned into the huge blacksmith hearth/ workshop for these two days: more than 15 furnaces/forges and 27 anvils were not empty these days: one team replaced another, a newly formed/mixed/formed at the festival pairs appeared ( formed from people who met each other at the festival for the first time but at once made friends): Ukraine-Hungary as an example of such pair; blacksmiths from the Crimea( Ukraine) fraternized with Belgian smiths: for two days they have been performing their own blacksmith shows, were entertaining visitors/spectators, made friends and in the end of the festival were exchanging the T-shirts with each other. Teams from Italy and the Netherlands were working next to them and also for 2 days. This was the peculiarity of the festival this year: 4 groups/teams of blacksmiths from 4 countries were representing/ portraying their countries in the most favourable light giving their show-program, involving the spectators/onlookers/ viewers in the process of forging, making their own projects(Belgians and Italians), treating the audience with the delicacies of their countries. Huub Sensen from Holland was frying crispy eatable things on the fire and was giving them to the people; there was something to eat/try at the Belgian team’s place/workshop and Bockstaele Roger, the president of the Belgian Guild of Blacksmiths (ASG – Ambachtelijke Smeders Gilde van Belgie, or Artistic blackSmith OrGanisation of Belgium), was treating the visitors; Italy rejoiced the people by the real Sicilian lemons from Pippo Contarino, one more president-this time the president of the Blacksmith Association of Sicily. There was the president of the Lithuanian Association of Balcksmiths- Linas Leschkausks- young but very promising blacksmith. A unique master with the recognizable style Zigmaz Zhilinskas – a revelation of Alfred Habermann in Helfstyn(Czechia) in 2005 – came with Linas. Ehibits of Zigmas were presented in Ukriane for the first time and no doubt that caused sincere interest of Ukrainian blacksmiths. “Zest/rasings/pecularities” of this year festival were: Shatella Santiago from Holland- a rare case of combination of feminine grace and masculine job(she is a blacksmith), elegant fingers with manicure and rings and a gas torch in them; Herve Vanhoutte from Belgium, hero-superman who struck the minds of all reporters and they hunted him all days of the festival to take an interview with him , the one who covered 2000 km on his motorcycle – and this is rarity/uncommon thing for this part of the world; vivid /pictorial /picturesque Finns Sami Karkkainen and Jarkko Vaisanen-very eccentric/extravagant, original/distinctive and sociable/open/communicative/easy to talk to; a Canadian of the Scotland origin in a traditional Scotland skirt- kilt – Patrick McIvor was well matched with them. He, as well as mentioned above heroes, were so exotical for the local dwellers that they became the city celebrities at once.
The organizers of the festival were also not born yesterday! Ukrainians presented Bogdan Popov’s school of traditional forging with his drum accompaniment, and Sergiy Firsov’s forging show. He did miracles – he helped people to reveal themselves. They stood around the purifying/refining fire and after that they forged the very first horseshoe in their life or a nail. Actually, it doesn’t matter what you forge, the result is what matters: you made something with your own hands, made it by yourself!!

For the second year in a row Volodymyr Kudleichuk’s blacksmith varenyks (dumplings/pyrohy- the traditional Ukrainian dish) have become the symbol of the festival. But this year they were not just with different fillings made of nails, screws, scobs. The forged metal dumplings were covered with the traditional Ukrainian ornaments by children. The ‘King of Varenyks” was a huge one. It became a moneybox and all participants put/threw some cents and copecks, coins as a gratitude for the real varenyks they ate at the square. The real varenyks were cooked at the furnace fire and Ukrainian beauties offered this delicacy to all people. This can be called very exotic- to eat a dumpling on the huge forged fork which also had been made at the festival – as the first step of the cooking process, to swallow the varenyk and smile at once as if all joy and smiles of Ukrainian blacksmiths was inside as the result of the meeting different smiths and international intercourse/relations !! Meanwhile the huge King-Varenyk was getting heavier because of the coins inside and in the end of the festival at the official closing it will play its “missionary” and uniting role: everybody will witness how all coins from inside of this big varenyk will pour out into the main fountain, the process was accompanied by loud cheers and almost tears of happiness. The old tradition had been explained to the participants: if to throw a coin into the water, you will definitely come back to this place next year. The friendly atmosphere of the festival affected/moved/ a lot of participants, made feel so sentimental: you should see how much enthusiasm was in the hurriedness of the blacksmiths to put their own coin into the King-Varenyk, to let the coins fell into the water making the desperate wish/desire come true: “Want to come back!”, “Want to return here”, “Want to see everything with my own eyes next year again!”
And there was a lot to see, believe me! For two days the smiths hammered the anvils- they were forging their decorative elements for the collaborative sculpture “Easter Sun’. By Saturday the auto portraits of the blacksmiths appeared on the surface of the Sun( V.Burduk’s embossing (Donetsk) ; he played a very important role in the organization of the festival), small suns, broad smiles were forged; nice combinations of glass and iron ( Marcin Klich, Poland), works of students and instructors of the higher educational institutions and colleges which prepare professionals in art metal sphere from Minsk( Belarus), Kiev, Lviv, Uzhgorod, Ivano-Frankivsk and the Precarpathian region(Ukraine).
Each of three days of the program was full by events on the agenda: there was something to do from the morning till evening and the volunteers –interpreters helped the participants all day long : grand opening of the festival on the first day, greetings of the mayor of the city V.Anushkevichus, ceremonial unveiling of a monumental sculpture “Masters’ Bouqet II”, which was made at the Blacksmith Festival in 2006 (now there are two such sculptures in Ukraine, both are similar but different; one of them is in Donetsk, another – in Ivano-Frankivsk, as if uniting two parts of Ukraine Eastern and Western; both sculptures were made in Ivano-Frankivsk); then followed the press conference of the organizers for mass media- they had a lot of questions to all participants and to Vladimir Sokhonevich from Russia in particular. In the evening the conference was held, more than 150 participants were present asking questions to Vladimir Markov, from St.Peterburg; his topic was “Designing of Metal Objects in Architecture”, to Sebastian Sicot (France) concerning international apprentice exchange, to Sergiy Tiasko (Ukraine) who presented the original and distinctive modern forging of his city –Uzhgorod; a narrative about Donetsk Park of Forged Figures, a description of the work of the Sicilian Organization of Blacksmiths by Pippo Contarino, the account about traditional and modern Finnish forging school. But Ferdinando Nava’s narrative about the secrets of melting the pure iron interested a lot of people most of all. Many of smiths were struck by the unusual qualities of this unique and rare metal, which has fantastic qualities: malleability/ductility, plasticity, compliance it is like a God’s gift to the smiths who would like to take up jewelry; this material gave a good account of itself.
Tired after the day’s intensive work the blacksmiths continued to strike up an acquaintance at the party – dishes were so tasty that even the thought of them makes the mouth water even now!
On the 5th of May, on Saturday, from early morning the hammers again hit the anvils, there was not enough place at the anvils for all people who were willing to forge in the tight circle of friends. It was a day off in the city, that is why there was even more of viewers- wouldn’t be afraid of the word saying that thousands of people passed through the square. The knight tournament from the Crimea attracted their attention most of all – fights on the square, armour of different epochs and cultures, real acuity and keenness of serious/grave fights was passed to spectators. They crashed/banged supporting their favourite knights, either narrowing the circle of viewers or making it wider giving place for the knight-entertainment lovers.
If you have never been to the blacksmith parties, you should visit one! Just take a sniff- a pig/hog is being grilled on the spit; miraculously it disappears somewhere accompanied with liters of beer. Listen! The blacksmiths of different nationalities made a competition who knows more songs. Ukrainians won, and the grateful audience (from Sicily) gave them a present – a bottle of Sicilian vine. Sicilians wrote in the e-mail later that they would never forget this evening, asked permission to come again!! You need no permissions! Come again, we are always glad to see our friends! It is difficult to explain that unity if souls, fraternization , talks, information exchange, looking through of the albums with the forged objects, making plans for the future to those who haven’t been to this wonderful Ukrainian traditional style restaurant. In such a way blacksmith friendship grows stronger and thus long-term professional relations begin/start.
The third day comes, the day of the opening of the blacksmith exhibition in the Art museum in the building of the cathedral of XVII century. Even the scenery/atmosphere itself – lancet windows, echo high above among the piers made the event unforgettable: rewarding the organizers of the festival and celebration of the sponsors –Alchevsk Metallurgical Combine, Ivano-Frankivsk financial company “Decra”, “Oblenergo”, “Favoryt”-all of them got a surprise from the organizers of the festival- a small forged sun, a copy of the big monumental project “Easter Sun”. The sculpture will be installed at one of the city squares. Everyone walks around the museum enjoying the objects of blacksmith art. Art- this is how by right the exhibits can be called. Filigree work and technique, originality of ideas, craftsmanship, combination of traditional methods of forging and modern technologies, novelty and tribute to traditions. The jury chose the winners and the photos of their objects will be in the next year catalogue published for the 2008 festival. Belgian team noted the high level of objects in Ukraine and already gave the application for the next year participation. Having told the picturesque stories at their motherland to other blacksmiths, two Finns are already ready to bring a big team of future participants from Finland next year to the festival in 2008. Only one Canadian guy having come back after our festival to the blacksmith courses to Ybbsitz (Austria) made good ripples in the water there…Success/not bad result? Maybe..but unity and friendship which had its beginning/start in Ivano-Frankivsk is much more important!
Ukraine has been a nice and unexpected revelation/surprise: the majority of the foreign participants have never been to this country before. That is why the actions/events of the last days of the festival were offered to those who would like to know and feel the soul of the nation deeper, to feel its customs and traditions better. Three excursions were organized, which of them is better – it is really difficult to say. Judge by yourself: a trip to the museum of pysanka (Easter painted eggs), where Easter eggs from all parts of Ukraine and other countries are gathered. The museum itself is built in the form of an Easter egg. After this museum there was another excursion to the museum of Hutsul (ethnic group living in the mountainous Ukrainian Carpathian mountains) Ethnography and Culture — lots of impressions.
Wild nature lovers were taken to the untrodden places of the Carpathian mountains by an old Austrian-Hungarian time train: it is a song and a poetry all together – to sit at the open platform of the carriage in the company of real friends and to admire the scenery of the awakening after the winter sleep Carpathian mountains, mountainous rivers, virgin beauty of the mountains.
The most enduring/ sturdy turned out to be 37 people who decided to go to the organized excursion and stayed overnight in the picturesque place of the mountains- a resort town of Yaremche, visiting a waterfall, feeding wild deers and hogs in an open-air cage, buying souvenirs at the souvenir market, having lunch in a nice Hutsul style Ukrainian type restaurant,
living in picturesque cottages with sauna, mountainous river purling under your windows, lulling you… But no one fell asleep till late at night- the bbq/party in the nature worked well; shashlik was grilled,all tasted a traditional Hutsul dish – banosh (a kind of rich maize porridge), ate baked in the fire potatoes… But the most important was the fantastic unity, cognation of souls!
Speaking different languages was not a trouble at all- everybody understood each other without words- supported singers and dancers from different countries with the applause at once, all tried to sing along guessing the melody of the song, beating time and clapping the rhythm of the music after some first notes. What an evening it was! Unforgettable!
It was painful to leave the friends.. It is difficult to part with the friends for one year, even if they promise to come again next year and not alone but with new participants to whom they will tell about these three wonderful days in the Western Ukraine, about unforgettable meetings, about close friendship… “Feel this country! Get to know these open-hearted, communicative, hospitable people! Let’s go there again next year!”
Doors of airplanes were shut with a bang /knock/tap/rap while closing…-We are leaving to book the tickets for the next 6th Blacksmith International Festival in 2008 on the 9-11 May, 2008. Hospitable Ukraine is already waiting for you!
The sounds of hammers ceased, no one hits the anvil- but a year will slip by- and the hearts will revive, begin to sparkle and there will be the blacksmith festival again!
