“The knight castle” – living by medieval canons. Summer 2005, Sudak
| від 8 08 2005 - 22:32
The festival “The knight castle” was held during eight days in the end of July, 2005 in the Genoese fortress (town of Sudak, the Crimea, Ukraine) that summoned admirers of historical fencing and reconstruction.
This festival was held for the fifth time, but only now there were blacksmiths coming from all the regions of Ukraine to the fortress to meet each other and to demonstrate their craft to the visitors.
In Ukraine, the Genoese fortress is considered to be the most suitable place for reconstruction of the medieval age. There are remains of the fortification walls of the fortress here, where once life of the Genoese people (emigrants from Italy) was in the full swing in the Xth-XVth centuries.
Throughout the year, visitors can only see those reconstructed walls, but during the days of the festival in July and August the fortress comes to life, so you can observe performances on the medieval topics. The participants arrive in the mediveal garments, that they make for this event. By the way, every participant can tell you the history of his or her costume and stages of its reconstruction and manufacturing. The armour and swords that are demonstrated are either ordered in special workshops or made by participants themselves. The participants are living in tents on the territory of the fortress and traditionally wear only medieval clothes.
Traditionally “bugurd” became the main event of the festival. It is the large battle perforance that includes heavy infantry, cavalry, archers and crossbowmen, pikemen and halberdiers and uses reconstructed artillery and siege equipment. The spectators are thrilled by clang of weapons, case-shot and feigned siege of fortress.
There is a mobile forge in the fortress where you can fix weapons and armour that can be damaged during the battle. Also with the guidance of the smith you can forge arrowhead or a horseshoe there by yourself. You can master some medieval crafts like pottery or do some shooting with bow or crossbow. The city of craftsmen also became the part of the festival, where you can walk down the street craftsmen and purchase some souveniers made by skilled craftsmen from Ukraine, Russia and Belorussia.
There is now a reconstructed missle weapon – trebushe on the territory of the fortress. It is quite possible that there will be a reconstructed medieval forge next year in the fortress where smiths during the summer can in turns demonstrate their skill.
